What is FSSAI?

FSSAI license number is a 14 digit number which comprises of five sections, each providing different information about the food business operator. This license number is the indicator that the Food Business Operator is registered. It needs to be affixed on the package of the food product, added with the FSSAI logo.
In order to ensure good quality and standards of food and drinks, FSSAI requires to perform various functions. Issuing License to food businesses is one such function. By obtaining license from FSSAI, Food business operators make sure that they are maintaining the food quality levels and not compromising with the health of the consumers.
Who needs the online FSSAI license registration?
The official website of FSSAI states that, as per Section 31 (1) &31 (2) of FSS Act, 2006 every food business operator in the country is required to be licensed/registered under the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India. The licensing and registration procedure and requirements are regulated by Food Safety and Standards (Licensing and Registration of food Business) Regulations, 2011.
FSSAI online license registration is mandatory for all those who wish to do the food business. It is a certificate required for running a food business. It is not only restricted to those involved in preparing food but also to all those who handles food at different stages, till it reaches to its ultimate destination, the consumers. This includes managing raw materials, manufacturing, processing, mess or canteen, work like packing, distribution and selling.

Types of FSSAI License

Registration is meant for petty food manufacturers that includes petty retailer, hawker, itinerant vendor or temporary stall holder or small or cottage scale industry having annual turnover up to 12 lacs. All food businesses having income more than this limit are required to take a license.
FSSAI License Registration Process Online
- Visit the FSSAI official website
- Fill the application form for signing up, here you will need to submit your contact details. Once you sign up, you get a user Id and password which is valid for 30 days.
- Using this you can apply for FSSAI license registration online. You will need to fill your details in the online application form and upload the required documents
- You will get Unique Application Reference Number
- Registering Authority (RA) may grant or reject registration, with reasons to be recorded in writing within 7 days of receipt of an application for registration.
- If registration is granted Food Business Operator can start the business
- In some cases, the Registration Authority may issue a notice for inspection before granting registration. Inspection is ordered within 7 days and it is done within 30 days. If the results of inspection is satisfactory, registration is granted.

- FSSAI declaration form
- Identity/ Address proof of the authorized person (Aadhar card/ Driving License/Passport/ Voter Id)
- Passport size photo
- Rent Agreement of Business premises (if rented property)
- For state licence, one of the following certificate is compulsory
- Trade license
- Shop and Establishment registration
- Panchayat / Corporation / Municipality License
- Import Export Code certificate is compulsory for the category of Import and Export business
- For manufacturing units, additional documents required are-
- Manufacturing unit photographs
- Plant layout and product details
- Details of machinery (used for production) in the letter head of the company
- If business is related to mineral water plant, then water test report is mandatory
